Leather Jacket Care Guide
A guide retailers can share with their customers
We make this guide available to wholesale partners as a customer-facing hand-out (print, email, or in-store). The leather jacket that lasts a customer 10 years is the leather jacket they recommend to friends. Care knowledge protects your retail reputation.
Daily and weekly care. Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth (not wet) to remove dust and surface dirt. Let air-dry naturally at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sunlight. Hang on a wide wooden or padded hanger — wire hangers will deform the shoulder over time.
Conditioning — twice a year is enough. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner (we recommend Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur or Lexol) twice yearly, before the cold season and before storage in spring. Work it in with a soft cloth, let absorb for 20 minutes, buff off excess. Over-conditioning makes leather greasy and dust-attracting — less is more.
Water exposure. Lambskin and sheepskin: avoid heavy rain when possible. If caught: hang at room temperature, never use a hairdryer or radiator to dry (cracks the leather). Once dry, condition lightly. Cowhide and nappa: more water-tolerant but same drying protocol.
Stains and serious cleaning. Surface marks: a slightly damp cloth usually lifts them. Oil or food stains: do not rub — apply a thin layer of cornstarch or talc, let absorb overnight, brush off. Stubborn stains: a professional leather cleaner, never standard dry-cleaning (the solvents damage leather).
Storage when not in use. Store on a padded hanger in a breathable garment bag (not plastic — plastic traps moisture and grows mold). Cool, dry environment. Avoid attics (temperature swings), basements (humidity), or closets without ventilation.
What customers should not do. Spray waterproofing on natural leather (changes the patina). Use silicone-based protectants (long-term damage). Iron the leather (irreversible damage). Dry-clean unless the dry-cleaner specializes in leather (the wrong cleaning destroys the jacket).
Buyer Questions
- Can we co-brand this guide with our store name?
- Yes — wholesale partners receive a customizable PDF version. Add your logo, contact info, and any in-store servicing offers.
- What about leather conditioning oils — recommend specific brand?
- Saphir Médaille d'Or Renovateur (premium), Lexol Conditioner (mid-market). Avoid generic mink-oil products on premium leather — fine for boots, too greasy for jackets.
- Is professional leather cleaning expensive?
- €40-€90 in most European cities — worth it for a €500+ jacket every 2-3 years. We recommend customers ask their retailer for local leather-specialist referrals.
