Full-Canvas vs Half-Canvas vs Fused

Why suit construction is the silent quality signal

When a customer touches a suit and says 'this feels different' — they're feeling the construction. Three approaches dominate menswear manufacturing today, and the choice between them defines whether your retail customer comes back in three years or returns the suit in three months.

Full-canvas construction. A piece of horsehair-and-wool canvas is hand-stitched into the chest and lapels of the suit. It drapes naturally over the body and develops a personal shape over time. Lapels roll, not fold. Lifetime in good wear: 8-15 years. This is what £1500+ Savile Row and €1000+ Italian retail suits use.

Half-canvas construction. Canvas is used in the chest and lapels but the lower jacket is fused (glued). This captures 80% of full-canvas drape and longevity at 60% of the labor cost. Lifetime: 5-8 years. This is the sweet spot for European boutique retail — €300-€700 retail price. Most of our wholesale partners standardize on half-canvas.

Fused construction. The interlining is glued (with thermoplastic adhesive) to the suit shell. Modern fusing is much better than 20 years ago — but still: the suit lacks personal shape memory, may bubble after dry-cleaning, and rarely outlasts 3-4 years. Acceptable for value retail (€100-200) and for non-frequent-wear suits (occasional ceremony).

How to verify which you have. Pinch the chest fabric between thumb and finger and gently pull. Full-canvas: you feel a third layer (the canvas) free-floating between shell and lining. Half-canvas: same in upper chest, single layer near the bottom. Fused: feels like one solid sheet everywhere.

Buyer Questions

Which construction is right for my retail price point?
Under €200: fused (cost-driven value tier). €300-€700: half-canvas (quality/price sweet spot). €700+: full-canvas (premium positioning).
Does fused construction always bubble?
Older fusing did. Modern thermoplastic fusing — if the manufacturer uses quality glue and proper pressure — can stay smooth for 3-4 years. Cheap fusing bubbles within 1-2 dry-cleans.
Does Savas Textile manufacture all three?
Yes. We offer full-canvas, half-canvas, and modern-fused construction to match retail price points. Half-canvas is our flagship.
